The Magic of Micro Goals – Keep Your Dancers Engaged & Motivated!

Keep it simple.
I just got back from judging in Duncan, BC last week (which is why you didn’t get a Quick Tip Tuesday—miss me?).
In addition to judging, I taught hip hop, jazz, and tap master classes. Let me tell you… micro goals were the secret weapon!
What’s one of the easiest ways to get dancers unstuck, and see instant progress? A micro lesson. Just do ONE thing. Instead of overwhelming them with everything at once, I focus on one small, achievable win at a time.
Here’s what I did last week:
✅ Tap: To improve their rhythms, I used my “Monkey See, Monkey Tap” game. A copycat clapping drill where they had to listen first, respond second. Suddenly, their timing sharpened! And even the shy ones who “normally don’t like tap” gained confidence by end of class.
✅ Jazz: We broke down placement and alignment in 4th position for pirouettes and balancing on one leg. The lightbulb moment? They realized it’s not about just the turn… it’s about the PREP. Once they got their setup right, everything felt stronger and more controlled.
Here’s other stuff you can try:
➡️ Hip Hop: Instead of saying “use more dynamics,” have dancers perform a section at three different energy levels: low, medium, and max. This makes them feel the difference and commit to bigger movement.
➡️ Ballet: If turnout is a struggle, have them hold a proper first position for 10 seconds before moving. The small goal builds strength and awareness before teaching more complex steps.
Be like Dory. Try setting one micro goal in your next class and see the difference!
Keep inspiring,
Shawn B
P.S. Small wins build big confidence. The more we can help dancers recognize their progress, the more motivated they’ll be to keep pushing forward. 💪 What micro goals have worked for you? Hit reply and let me know.
P.P.S. This year’s mantra: STOP Doing Everything Yourself. If you need help, hit reply and ASK for help. Asking for help doesn’t make you weak. Asking for help keeps you STRONG.
