Read below to learn how!
Hey, Shawn here!
I’m following up on last week’s newsletter about losing gracefully. Because many of you it seems have dancers who don’t know how to navigate this subject.
This is PART TWO. (Go read my last newsletter, then come back to this one)
Here’s 3 simple, no-fluff tips I gave to dancers at Zirka Dance Challenge in Grande Prairie. Because let’s be real:
Losing stings.
Confidence wobbles.
And dancers need real tools— not just a “you got this” sticker.

Here’s 3 Tips To Help Overcome Losing I shared in my talk last week. Try these with your dancers (or yourself). They work.
1. Become a “Student of the Obvious”
It’s OBVIOUS some dancers have higher jumps. It’s OBVIOUS some are cleaner turners. Instead of spiraling, study the obvious. Ask yourself (or your dancers):
🔍 “How do they make that look so easy?”
Then… do that. Treat it like a cheat code. Because it is.
2. Become a Good Reader
This one got laughs—and head nods. We have millions of books, blogs, interviews, and tips available. But guess what?
People don’t read them. There’s 2 ways to learn:
P.E. (Personal Experience) = trial and error
O.P.E. (Other People’s Experience) = way faster
Reading is the shortcut. It’s free. It’s available. I even wrote a book that helps dancers crush self-doubt and build confidence (You Came To Slay!)… and some people STILL don’t read it. Why?! 🤷🏽♂️

3. ASK For Help (From the RIGHT People)
This one’s big. Too many dancers (and adults!) confuse opinions with expertise. A friend who “did comp once in 2016” is not your mentor.
Instead:
📱 Use that $1,000 phone in your pocket to DM a coach, send an email, book a session. The right people WANT to help. You just have to ask.
But hold up! After a loss, don’t overwhelm your dancers. Focus on just ONE of these tips this week. That one little shift might be exactly what they need to bounce back.
BTW: Got a dancer who’s struggling with confidence right now? Consider sharing You Came To Slay! with them. It’s made just for this.
Keep being the awesome you,
Shawn B
